How MarkItDown AI keeps Browser Basic files local and separates explicit Advanced uploads, account, payment, and analytics data.
File processing
When the converter identifies a file as Browser Basic, that supported file is processed locally in the browser and is not uploaded to MarkItDown AI or a document provider.
Browser Basic failures, mode changes, sign-in, and file selection never trigger an upload. On the same page, an eligible user may keep the selected file in browser memory, review the Advanced retention notice, and explicitly click Convert with Advanced before the source is uploaded to private temporary storage and the document-processing provider. After a full-page Google sign-in redirect, browser security requires the file to be selected again.
For Advanced, the private upload permission normally expires after 15 minutes. Source deletion is scheduled shortly after processing or after that capability expires, including abandoned uploads, with a one-day private-storage lifecycle as a final deletion fallback.
A successful Advanced Markdown result may appear in Recent conversions and remain available to the signed-in account for up to 24 hours from task authorization for review, copy, and download. The service does not retain the original filename or offer the source document for download. At result expiry, converted Markdown and provider result identifiers are cleared. A minimal task audit without source content, Markdown, original filename, or provider result URL may remain for up to 35 days for usage, security, and monthly cost reconciliation, then the task row is deleted after source deletion is confirmed.
Browser recovery stores only a random attempt identifier and basic file metadata locally for up to 24 hours, not the file contents or provider URL.
No training on your files
MarkItDown AI does not use Browser Basic files, explicitly submitted Advanced files, or converted Markdown output to train models.
Browser Basic does not send file contents to a server or LLM provider. Advanced sends only the currently selected eligible file after the user explicitly clicks Convert with Advanced.
Account and payment data
Account records may include your name, email address, authentication provider identifier, plan, usage, orders, and subscription status so the service can authenticate you and enforce plan limits.
Stripe provides secure checkout, payment processing, receipts, and subscription billing for enabled paid plans. Checkout remains unavailable whenever the relevant server-side rollout switch is closed.
Payment card details are entered through Stripe Checkout and will not be stored in the MarkItDown AI database. MarkItDown AI stores only the customer, payment, order, and subscription references needed to reconcile an order and provide access; we do not store full card numbers or card security codes.
Service providers and disclosures
MarkItDown AI may use service providers for application hosting, private temporary storage, document processing, authentication, configured analytics and measurement, support, and Stripe payment processing. Each provider receives only the information needed for its configured function.
Browser Basic file contents are not disclosed to these providers. An eligible Advanced file is sent to private temporary storage and the configured document-processing provider only after the user reviews the retention notice and explicitly clicks Convert with Advanced.
Payment card details are submitted directly to Stripe when checkout is enabled. MarkItDown AI does not sell source files, converted Markdown, or account data, and does not disclose them for third-party model training.
Analytics boundary
On configured production hostnames, Google Tag Manager, Google Analytics, Microsoft Clarity, and other configured measurement scripts may load before you make a choice. Google receives a denied consent signal until you accept and may send limited cookieless signals; Microsoft Clarity and other non-Google tools may operate independently of the Google consent choice.
After Google consent is granted, analytics may collect page route, file extension, size bucket, duration bucket, plan type, price version, checkout outcome, and error code to improve the product.
Analytics must not collect file contents, converted Markdown, full filenames, payment card details, or private text snippets from documents.
The first-visit Cookie Settings card lets you accept or reject Google analytics and advertising storage; closing it is treated as rejection. The choice is stored for up to 12 months. To make a new choice, clear site data for markitdownai.org and revisit the site. See the Cookie Policy for details.
Your privacy rights
Subject to applicable law, you may request access to personal data associated with your account, ask us to correct inaccurate data, request deletion of eligible data, or ask us to restrict or stop certain processing. You may also raise a privacy complaint or question by emailing support@markitdownai.org.
Where processing relies on consent, you may withdraw that consent for future processing. Withdrawal does not affect processing already completed, and technical, security, fraud-prevention, accounting, or legal records may be retained where applicable law permits or requires it.
Send a request from the email address associated with your account when possible. We may ask for reasonable information to verify that the requester is the account owner before disclosing, correcting, or deleting account data. We aim to acknowledge requests within two business days and will respond within the time required by applicable law.
Product boundary
Supported Browser Basic local inputs are PDF, DOCX, PPTX, XLSX, HTML, CSV, JSON, XML. Batch conversion, paid API access, audio or video transcription, remote URL fetching, and general-purpose OCR are not sold with the current plans.
